Denzel Washington as Don Pedro
Denzel Washington is incredibly sexy. But, I haven’t always liked all of his characters. The one character he portrayed that I find particularly appealing is his Don Pedro in Kenneth Branagh’s version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Before that movie, I had no idea what great comedic timing he has. Just what I like in a man–good looks and a sense of humor. And, the really interesting thing about this role is that he was cast against type. He plays a character who would be traditionally played by a white actor. The other actors in the cast are white, including Keanu Reeves who plays Don Pedro’s brother. Non-traditional casting is fun and exciting and this specific example of it definitely is so. Denzel is a talented actor who brings wit, charm and good looks to Don Pedro. If I were to create a role in this movie for myself, I would make sure that in my fantasy my character ends up with Don Pedro.
